The Mingan Archipelago is a Nature Reserve in eastern Quebec, on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  It includes close to a thousand islands, and features the largest group of monoliths in all of Canada.  These structures are formed by the eroding of limestone from wind, water, weather, and time.  As more and more pieces crumble away, they leave behind a maze of towering pillars and mounds.

The islands and the waters surrounding them are home to many plants and animals.  Even some bear and moose make their way to the islands nearer to the mainland!  Rare plants, such as the Lady’s Slipper Orchid, and many species of shorebirds, including the Arctic Puffin, are protected in this unique coastal habitat.
